North Glasgow Integration Network
North Glasgow Integration Network (NGIN) was established in 2001 and is a Network of organisations and individuals that actively support and are strongly committed to the principles of integration in North East Glasgow.
The Network believes that integration is essential for the common good of all people in the local area, Glasgow wide and to the nation in a Scottish and UK context. North Glasgow has a very mixed population with many people that have come to the City from many countries around the world including the largest proportion of asylum seekers in the City. The role of the Network is to support these people to live, work, learn and socialise together with the indigenous Scottish people in harmony and with mutual respect.
The Network currently has sixty individuals, and organisations from the voluntary, statutory and business sectors that provide a very broad range of services and support for people that have come here seeking sanctuary and refuge from intolerable situations and where their lives are under threat in their home countries. In addition the Network supports the integration of settled black, minority and ethnic communities as well as migrant workers from Eastern Europe
The Aims and objectives of the Network are:
About the area served This Network covers the following geographical area: North Glasgow (Glasgow North East Community Planning area, encompassing Sighthill, Red Road and Royston) The Network works closely with the neighboring Maryhill Integration Network to deliver services where appropriate, and liaises with other Networks across the city as a whole. Asylum Seekers and refugees Since the 2001 census, approximately 18,000 asylum seekers have been dispersed to Glasgow, which is now the second biggest dispersal area after London. The best estimates of those who have been granted leave to remain is about 7500. North Glasgow Integration Network anticipates that the majority of our work in the foreseeable future, based on the current knowledge of local population mix, will continue to be around the integration of asylum seekers and refugees.
